Is AI about to replace Google search?

July 01, 2025 | by NeSEO

The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) is being felt across every industry sector, as well as throughout many aspects of our everyday lives.

Scarily, AI is expected to replace a long list of jobs across several sectors, with roles in data entry and processing, customer care, manufacturing and assembly work, transportation and delivery, and administration just some of the positions that will be filled by bots in the coming decade. It appears Google may be out of a job too if AI has its way…

Could this be the end of the world’s favourite search engine?

A quick answer to this question – probably not. As of February 2025, Google still holds the largest market share, which has grown to a whopping 90.15% globally. Bing remains in second place with a measly 3.7% share.

The latest figures may make for unfair reading but they also report a (very) slight slip in Google’s market share in comparison to 2023. During 2023, Google boasted a 92.38% share, one of its highest to date.

Is artificial intelligence slowly edging its way in?

The drop in market share isn’t going to see Google losing too much sleep, but it does beg the question – are AI search engines taking over?

Let’s face it, Google and its extremely complex, all-seeing ecosystem is unlikely to be dethroned any time soon! That’s because the use of AI is all about improvement or enhancement. At the moment, AI tools like ChatGPT, Bing Chat and Gemini are simply reshaping the way things are done. They use more natural language, machine learning and predictive algorithms to provide the answers browsers are looking for that bit faster.

What does the future look like for AI and Google search?

In an age where we want everything, including our search results, fast, AI has some real potential. It’s giving us quick summaries of reams of content on the most in-depth topics, it’s offering highly personalised recommendations in a language we can understand, and it’s even helping us write emails, code and essays.

When searching for the answer to your question, AI could give you a direct, tailored summary pretty quickly, without having to click on countless links and scroll through the pages yourself. This ease means anything is possible when it comes to AI competing with more traditional search engines like Google so without a crystal ball, who knows what the future holds for them both!
